The Museum of Florida History, situated at the R. A. Gray Building in Tallahassee, Florida, is best known for its extensive collections, research, educational programs, and exhibits that depict the ways in which the people have shaped and acted in response to the natural and cultural environments. Established in 1977, the Museum of Florida History primarily aims at promoting knowledge and appreciation of the history of Florida by collecting, preserving, interpreting, and exhibiting the evidences of the past and present cultures in the State. As the state history museum, it mainly emphasizes on artifacts and eras that are unique to Florida's development.
The permanent exhibits at the Museum include dioramas of pre-historic Florida and American Indian cultures. The most impressive exhibits include a 9-foot (3-m) tall mastodon; a “tin can tourist”, a 1927 Model-A Ford converted to an RV; and an instructive step-by-step demonstration of how to construct a dugout canoe. Some of the other exhibits include the Spanish galleon treasures, Civil War memorabilia, artifacts and documents from the period of British ownership, a wonderfully restored 1920s citrus packing plant, and a restructured 1900 riverboat that allows the guests to get onboard and act as if they are an early 20th century passenger, captain, or a pilot.
In addition to the permanent exhibits, the Museum hosts a number of traveling shows, such as “Myth and Legacy’. The temporary exhibits at the Museum include a photographic exhibit of Ernest Hemmingway’s life in the Florida Keys and a movie poster room featuring all the movies made in Florida until today. The Museum of Florida History is the perfect place to explore and understand the history of the state and is a “must-see’ for all those who visit Tallahassee.
