The New Capitol Building, situated at the intersection of Monroe Street and the Apalachee Parkway in Tallahassee, serves as the state capitol of the State of Florida. It is home to the chambers of the Florida Legislature, comprising of the Florida Senate and the Florida House of Representatives, as well as the other executive and legislative offices. The area to the east of the Capitol has been the site of memorials on the deaths of 1000th, 2000th, 3000th, and the 4000th U. S. Death in Iraq. It has also been the site of twice weekly Peace Witnesses for over 6 years.
Walker Park, which is now located between the Old State Capitol and the Florida Supreme Court, was chosen as the site for the new Capitol Complex in 1972. Money for this new complex to include House and Senate Chamber and offices was authorized by the Legislature in the same year. The construction of this 22-story executive building was completed on August 19, 1977, and it was officially dedicated on March 31, 1978. Today, this magnificent Florida State Capitol Building is best known for its architecture and is one of the major points of tourist interest in the City.
Designed by renowned architects, Reynolds, Smith, and Hills of Jacksonville and Edward Durrell Stone of New York, the New Capitol Building is a symbol of Florida’s growth and development. It has been designed as per Stone’s signature style of ‘New Classicism’. The offices of the Governor and the Cabinet members are made on the Plaza level of the Capitol. The chambers of the House of Representatives and the Senate, as well as the offices of the Senate President, the House Speaker, Clerk, and Sergeant at Arms function on floors two through four of the Capitol’s base structure.
The Legislative Chambers on the fourth floor have their respective public viewing galleries on the fifth floor. The executive and legislative offices, on the other hand, are housed on the floors between the deck and the first five floors of the building. In addition, the New Capitol Building also houses a snack bar on the 10th floor, a cafeteria on the Lower Level, and the Florida Welcome Center inside the west Plaza Level entrance. The Observation Deck at the 22nd floor of the Capitol Building is nearly 512 ft (156.06 m) above sea level and is worth a visit. Other important landmarks near the New Capitol Building include the Florida Sri Chimoy Peace State Marker on the northeast corner of the Complex; a wonderful replica of the Liberty Bell to the east of the House Office Building; the King Memorial within the Capitol Courtyard; the Florida Fraternal Order of Police Law Enforcement Memorial; two marble obelisks on the lawn of the Old Capitol; and the Florida Heritage Fountain in the center of Waller Park.
