Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park, situated in Wakulla Springs, Florida, is best known for its immaculate beauty and uniqueness. It is designated a National Natural Landmark and has also been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This 2,860-acre (11.57 sq. km.) state park is also home to the world’s largest and deepest fresh water springs. The spring bowl encompasses nearly 3 acres (1.2 hectares) of land and its water temperature remains constant at 70oF year-round. In addition to the astonishing springs, the park also features wonderful old-growth floodplain forests and an abundant wildlife.
The Wakulla Springs State Park also offers visitors a variety of boat tours. The three-mile (4.8 km) tour along the spectacular Wakulla River in a 45-minute cruise is quite economical for families. The various aspects of the Wakulla Springs forest ecosystem can be explored by three scenic trails, which take visitors through cypress wetlands, hardwood hammocks, and upland pine forests. The multi-use trail on the north side of the park is very popular with horseback riders, hikers, and mountain bikers. Snorkeling in the spring waters is yet another popular attraction in the Park. Another major tourist activity in the park is wildlife viewing. The wildlife species that can be most commonly spotted in the park include alligators, deer, turtles, and birds.
Wakulla Springs State Park is, in fact, the only park in the Florida State Parks System that runs a lodge. This historic lodge was established in 1937 by financier Edward Ball. It features 27 guest rooms, each furnished with period furniture. Other amenities offered at the Park include a pavilion, a concession area, observation deck, the waterfront ticket office, and a designated swimming area. The multi-level observation and diving platform at the springhead offers breathtaking view of the spring. However, recreational diving is not permitted for safety reasons. The State Park also hosts a number of special events, including a birding festival, New Year’s Eve galas, and twilight cruises. The State Park offers one of the Florida’s finest wildlife viewing areas and takes the visitors in for a real treat.
