Manatees: The Last Generation

manatees: the last generation

SeaWorld is well-known for its ‘Manatee Rescue Program’, where several manatees that need help, including the sick, orphaned, and the injured ones, are rescued, cured, and released back to the Florida waters after recovery. This rescue programs deals with nearly 20-25 manatees every year. While in recovery, the rescued manatees are kept safe in the manatee attraction at SeaWorld. This manatee exhibit is popularly known as the “Manatees: The Last Generation”.

At “Manatees: The Last Generation”, visitors are welcomed with a 5-minute long movie about manatees and their endangered status. After the movie, guests are taken to an underwater viewing area, where they can view the manatees through a huge, thick, curved window that is nearly 10 feet (3 m) high and 60 feet (18 m) long. This impressive exhibit also features a number of interactive displays, which aim at educating the public about the manatees. Besides, visitors can also have a close look at these creatures as they swim in the pools above ground.

The manatee rehabilitation center at SeaWorld features three large freshwater pools and the world’s largest manatee primary care center, where surgery is done on the injured manatees. This manatee clinic is not accessible to the public, but it can be visited on the special “Saving a Species Tour”. “Manatee: The Last Generation” has been designated as the best zoological exhibit in the nation by the American Zoological Association. The best place to view these 1000 pounds-plus social cows in their natural habitat is at the Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park, and the best place to see them in a stimulated natural habitat is at Sea World. This unique manatee attraction at SeaWorld is truly worth a visit.
