The Islands of Adventure

the islands of adventure

Universal's Islands of Adventure, situated in Orlando, Florida, is a popular theme park that was established in May 1999 as a component of the expansion that transformed Universal Studios Florida to the Universal Orlando Resort. The park has been designed on the theme of a journey of exploration, where the visitors start out from a main port on an ‘inland sea’ to explore five distinct islands. Each of these ‘islands’ are patterned on a different theme, emphasizing more on fun and adventure. A sixth island based on the popular Harry Porter theme is likely to open in 2009. The Port of Entry and the ‘islands’ are well arranged around a ‘lagoon’ and are presented in a clockwise order, beginning at the park entrance.

The Port of Entry, based on the theme of an Arabian bazaar, marks the main entrance of the park and features a number of shops and services. It is also home to the Confisco Grille restaurant and Islands of Adventure Trading Company, an elegant gift-shop. The Marvel Super Hero Island is best known for its thrilling rides, most of which are inspired by Marvel comic books and Marvel characters, such as Wolverine, Iceman, Captain America, Kingpin, and Hobgoblin. The main rides and attractions on this island include the Incredible Hulk Coaster, Doctor Doom’s Fear-fall, the Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, and the Storm Force Accelatron.

Toon Lagoon, on the other hand, is based on the characters of Jay Ward and King Features Syndicate. This area is a favorite with both adults and kids and is well-known for its water-based rides. It is home to three major counter-service restaurants, including the Comic Strip café, Blondie’s, and Wimpey’s & All on Mulberry Street. The most popular rides and attractions at Toon Lagoon include the ‘Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls’, ‘Popeye’s and Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges’, and ‘Me, Ship, the Olive’. Jurassic Park River Adventure, a sophisticated ‘shoot-the-chutes’ ride through the main exhibits of Jurassic Park; Pteranodon Flyers, Camp Jurassic, and the Jurassic Park Discovery Center are the prime attractions at the Jurassic Park Island.

The ‘Lost Continent’ island is designed on the theme of ancient myths and legends, and is divided into three main sections, medieval Europe, ancient Arabia, and mythological Greece. The main rides and attractions on this island include the Dueling Dragons, the Flying Unicorn, the Eighth Voyage of Sinbad, Poseidon’s Fury, and the Mystic Fountain. Seuss Landing, themed on the works of the renowned author Dr. Seuss, is the fifth island in the park. It is home to the Green Eggs and Ham Café and several thrilling rides and attractions, including Caro-Seuss-el, the Cat in the Hat, If I Ran the Zoo, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, and the High in the Sky Seuss Trolley Train Ride.
