Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground

fort wilderness resort and campground

Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground, situated within the Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Florida, is a well-frequented camping resort, designed with a pastoral theme with tree-lined winding roads that meander through various regions. Inaugurated on November 19, 1971, Fort Wilderness Resort is complete with a number of campsites, where almost all the required facilities are made available to the visitors. The cabins in the lodging area are designed to resemble log cabins or simple forest lodges.

Until the early 1980s, the 3½-mile (5.6-km) long steam-powered Fort Wilderness Railroad served as the sole mode of transportation around the resort grounds to guests visiting the nearby River Country water park. Some of the track of this railroad still remains in place in the outlying areas of the campground. Other amenities now offered to the visitors and campers include two world-class, heated swimming pools, a buffet, the Trail’s End Restaurant, and a number of playgrounds. The Campground also features a 2.3-mile (3.7-km) long paved and sand exercise trail, which runs from the Wilderness Lodge to the petting farm. The Comfort Stations on every loop provide visitors with showers, restrooms, a laundry room, and a newspaper outlet.

Fishing and horseback riding are among other popular recreational activities at the Resort. Fort Wilderness Resort is also well-recognized for its two dinner shows, Mickey’s Backyard BBQ and the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue. Also, a free Campfire Sing-Along with Chip ‘n Dale is organized nightly at the campground. During the campfire, a Disney Cast Member leads songs in an outdoor amphitheater, while the two characters Chip ‘n Dale sign autographs and pose for photos with the seated audience. After the campfire sing-along, a popular Disney movie for children is features on the outdoor screen. The Electrical Water Pageant also passes the marina and the beach every night. Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground is a perfect place for all those who are interested in camping and is definitely not to be missed.
