Space Mountain, located at magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World Resort, is one of the major attractions in Tomorrow Land. Established on January 15, 1975, Space Mountain is best known for its magnificent, 183-foot (56-m) tall white structure. It features an extremely fast, spine-chilling roller coaster. The dimly lit queue in this spectacular structure seems to be endless. As the guests near the loading area, also known as the ‘Space Port’, they can hear shrieks from the other space travelers. On reaching the loading platform, the guests are requested to board six-passenger rockets, seated single-file, for an exciting journey into the space.
The riders’ vehicles make their way through a long tunnel of lights and colors and then suddenly thrusts into the darkness of space on a roller coaster. The vehicles dip and veer through the galaxy, and take the riders past glowing planets and shooting stars. The ride finally concludes at the Tomorrow Land Arcade. The two sides of the Space Mountain features two identical ride tracks; one is 3186 m (10,452 ft) long, while the other is 3196 m (10,486 feet) long. The main structure, painted ‘icy white’, has a light blue colored base.
The entire Space Mountain ride features maximum speeds of 28 mph and lasts for nearly two and a half minutes. The minimum height requirement for this ride is 44 inches (111.7 cm). Pregnant women, very young children, and people with heart, blood pressure, neck, or back problems should not ride. Space Mountain is a FASTPASS attraction and visitors are strongly advised to use it during the peak times! The best time to ride is during the Magic Kingdom’s Extra Magic Hour. A popular place for shopping near the Space Mountain is Mickey’s Star Traders, where a variety of Space Mountain merchandise is offered to all the guests.
