History of Georgia

  empire state building

Georgia, one of the original Thirteen Colonies that revolted against the British rule in the American Revolution, is situated in the Southeastern United States. The local mound-builder culture was prominent in the area from 1540 until 1560. The discord between England and Spain over control of Georgia started in 1670, when the Carolina colony was established by the English. After decades of conflict, the Spanish mission system was destroyed permanently by the Carolinians and allied Indians during the invasions of 1702 and 1704. In 1732, a royal charter was granted to a group of philanthropists as the Trustees of the Province of Georgia. The region was then led by a series of presidents named by the trustees for several years. In 1752, Georgia was finally made a crown colony, with a governor appointed by the British King.

Georgia signed the 1776 Declaration of Independence and participated actively in the American Revolution. On January 2, 1788, it sanctioned the United States Constitution and became the 4th state of the United States of America. The first state constitution was established in the state in 1777. The state of Georgia seceded from the Union, joined the Confederacy, and became the main theater of the American Civil War in 1861. The main battles during this time took place at Atlanta, Kennesaw Mountains, and Chickamauga.

A major historical event, which also served as the background for the 1936 novel Gone with the Wind, was General William Tecumseh Sherman’s March to the Sea that destroyed a large portion of the state, from Atlanta to Savannah. Following Reconstruction, on July 15, 1870, Georgia became the last state to be readmitted to the Union. Popularly known as the “Peach State”, Georgia has had 5 official state capitals. Atlanta became the fifth capital of the State in 1868.
