Crater Rim Drive, an eleven miles drive, which surrounds Kilauea's summit caldera and craters, goes through desert, rain forest and provides entrance to well known, attractive short walks and stops. To start the trip, the best place can be considered as Kilauea Visitor Center. This center runs many films all over the day to provide a deep insight into the park and volcanology. One can make any sort of enquiry at the information desk regarding hikes, ranger-guided walks and other programs.
The Volcano Art Center is located nearby. This center is accommodated in the famous original Volcano House made during 1877. It invited a number of visitors to Kilauea in 19th century, and now it acts as a gallery for craftsmen and local artists.
Before one starts out in the car, one may wish to take a one-mile round trip on the Earthquake Trail. Once, on an early morning of November 16, 1983, an earthquake (magnitude 6.6) shook a segment of the Crater Rim Drive.
The Crater Rim Drive was rerouted again, and now the old trembled roadway is a smooth walking trail that is appropriate for wheelchairs and strollers. The trail and tenders fine sights of Mauna and starts at the Volcano House parking lot.
It is to be taken care that one should protect oneself by paying attention to the warning signs and help to protect nene, an endangered species. One must remember that volcano fumes are dangerous for health. Tourists with breathing and heart problems, little children, infants and pregnant women are the one at maximum risk. They are requested to avoid Sulfur Banks and other regions as there are plenty of volcanic fumes are present.
