Hilo is a coastal city in the State of Hawaii. Hilo’s population was observed as 40,759 in 2000. Hilo, located in the South Hilo District, is known as the county seat of Hawaii. Hilo Bay is overlooked in this city. It is near two volcanoes, Mauna Kea, an inactive volcano and Mauna Loa, considered as very active. Mauna Kea is a volcano upon which a number of the best astronomical observatories are placed. The city is dwelling of the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

Another major attraction in Hilo is ‘The Merrie Monarch Festival’, a week-long celebration of modern and ancient hula, is organized each year following Easter.

As for the history of Hilo, it is said that the Polynesians came to Hilo area nearly 1100 A.C. They ultimately settled the coast of Hilo Bay, farmed the crops, traded and fished along the Wailuku River. Late 1700 were the days of the King Kamehameha. Hilo was the heart of political movement and social development.

In 1940's, Hilo observed some more changes as missionaries who preferred Hilo as a main location to start the church, arrived here. They were the people who brought Western education and Christianity along with Puritanism. Their arrival brought so many changes to this city. More changes were noted in 1960’s. Cultural diversity is major attractive thing in Hilo. In Hilo, a local expression, "mixed plate", explains well the effect created by Polynesians, Japanese, Chinese, Koreans, Portuguese, and other Pacific Islanders on Hilo's mixed culture of today.
