James Kealoha Beach Park

james kealoha beach park

James Kealoha Beach Park is situated a few miles away east of Hilo. This beach provides snorkeling and swimming during calm waters. This beach’s eastern end is guarded by a shore break and small island. There are quite a few sandy areas nearby this beach and the water can be observed as very calm and clear. The western end of the beach park faces the open ocean. During high seas, strong currents and rough water makes this a very unsafe area. This remarkable beach is also famous as "Four Mile".

This beach offers a blend of snorkeling, decent swimming, surfing and fishing during the winter months. Scout Island, which is considered as a good camping ground around, is situated just offshore. The island name is derived from the regular boy scout camping trips that are pretty famous here. Overall this beach is very good to visit. If you look for calm and clean beaches with an intention to enjoy a peaceful day, this beach is just right choice for you.

You can reach at the sprawling, a 60-acre Lokoaka fishpond, by passing Kalanianaole Avenue. This was mainly used by the Hawaiians in old time as a fishing ground.

The Lokoaka pond in now adopted for business use and at present produces some of the finest mullet on the whole island.

  • Driving Directions: Follow Highway 19 through Hilo to Kalananaole Avenue (19). Follow Highway 19 along the waterfront east of Hilo until you reach the beach park, approximately three miles (5 km).
