Lyman Museum and Mission House

lyman museum

The Lyman Museum, a nationally accredited museum showcases the cultural and natural history of the state of Hawaii in its exhibits and missionary home. The museum displays compilations of minerals and seashells that are world-wide in scope, artists of Hawaii, ancient art of China, and varying special exhibitions. Many community events and programs are organized every year. Situated in downtown Hilo, this museum tenders an exclusive cultural and educational experience for public.

This historic museum in Hilo presents the unusual prospects to view a unique compilation of civilian fashions intended to help, encourage wartime agendas in three nations. Chosen from public and private collections, many textiles, particularly from Japan, have never been renowned or photographed until this exhibition was shown in New York  and Honolulu.

In 1832, two missionaries David and Sarah Lyman landed on this Island of Hawai.
They constructed The Lyman Mission House as a family home and a school as well.

After many years, the House turned into a place to raise their seven kids and host guests together with many Hawaiian and other famous celebrities like Mark Twain. These missionaries never went back to England and settled in Hawaii permanently.

This Mission House is said to be the oldest wooden construction on this Island and among the oldest in the State. It features tools, furniture, artifacts and household items that Lymans once used.  Throughout the tour of the Mission House, one can understanding the history and have a feel of that time.  The Mission House remains open for the general public from Monday through Saturday.
