Puuhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park

Puuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park is situated on the west shoreline of the Hawaii Island in the U.S. this park is a United States National Historical Park that preserves the place where, up until the beginning of the 19th century, natives of Hawaii who broke a kapu. The kapu is one of the ancient rules against the god that could keep people away from certain death by escaping to "puuhonua". The lawbreakers would be forgiven by a priest and freed to leave. Sometimes, conquered warriors would also find shelter here at the time of battles. Exterior to the Great Wall that surrounds the puuhonua was home to numerous generations of great chiefs.

This 420-acre (1.7 km²) park was mainly constructed as City of Refuge National Historical Park in 1955 and was renamed further on November 10, 1978.
It comprises of the puuhonua and many archeological sites counting: royal fishponds, temple platforms, sledding tracks, and many village sites. The Hale o Keawe temple and many other structures are now reconstructed. The park consists of a restoration of the Hale O Keawe Heiau.

This structure was originally made a Kona chief famous as Kanuha. It was dismantled and stripped by Lord George Byron in 1825. Once, it was an abode of the bones of significant chiefs, perhaps including Captain Cook. If you come here, you can observe the history of the Hawaii’s lifestyle. Old temples still depicts the story of the past. Nowadays this park works as a sanctuary and a cool and relaxing place for tourists and offers a shelter for wildlife within. Green sea turtles and Sea Turtles can be very well encountered on the visit to the park.
