Rainbow Falls is situated at some distance from Rainbow Drive in Hilo. To reach here you can drive to the right on Rainbow Drive. A visit to the Rainbow Falls is unforgettable. This waterfall is one of those falls in Hilo that are pretty easily accessible. You can even walk for sometime and reach here. Many people like to visit this place in the morning for two reasons—first, the beauty of the nature is at its best in the morning and second, rainbow can be frequently seen from this area. When morning sun shines and throws the rays on the waterfall, the moment captivates the heart.
One can easily get close to the top of the waterfall as there is an easy walkway to the left of the fall. It is advised not to jump over the falls as many people, when come here, find this activity very enjoyable and get hurt frequently. There is almost no way to get to the pool at the bottom.
The Wailuku River, which is the origin of the Rainbow falls lies in the western side of downtown Hilo. It is an 18 miles long river, and is supposed to be the longest one in the Hawaiian archipelago. The meaning of this Wailuku, river is "water of destruction.
Right behind the falls, there is a cave of godess Hina. Overall the visit to Rainbow falls is a very exciting experience. People come here in the rainy seasons as well. During the rainy seasons, the water flow become very fast. |
