Hanakapiai Falls

hanakapiai falls

Hanakapiai Falls is a 100 ft (30.48 m) high fall situated off the 11 mile (17.7 km) long Kalalau Trail. This beautiful cascading waterfall has been named after a beautiful Menehune Princess. This spectacular waterfall can be reached by hiking the Kalalau Trail that begins at the end of Highway 560 at Ke`e Beach. The beautiful Hanakapiai Beach is located just 2 miles (3.2 km) from here. At the beach, a stream drops down the Hanakapi'ai Valley. One can reach the waterfall and the pool by following this part of the trail for two more miles (3.2 km). Camping at the Hanikapiai Falls, Hana koa Falls or at the Kalalau Beach requires a valid State permit. It is strongly recommended to make your plans much in advance as there is a long waiting list to obtain state permits to camp at the magnificent Hanakapiai Falls.

Hiking to these falls and back is a strenuous 8 mile (12.8 km) round trip and might take one full day. Moreover, the part of the trail that leads to these falls is slippery, steep, muddy, and has a number of stream crossings. Therefore, hikers should be extra careful while hiking. It is also advisable to wear sturdy, strapping, hiking boots and carry ‘tabbies’ along with you. Tabbies are specially made water shoes that aid in boulder hopping. Besides, hikers should also carry water, food, insect repellents, and sunscreen along. Hanakapiai Falls is one of the most spectacular waterfalls on the Na Pali Coast. Camping at the falls is charged at the rate of $10/person/night.
