The Hanakapiai Valley, named after a Menehune princess, is a stream-fed, steep-walled, magnificent valley. This lush stream valley can be reached via the Hanakapiai Falls Trail that starts 2 miles (3.21 km) up the Kalalau Trail on the spectacular Na Pali Coast at the Hanakapiai Beach. This side trail further leads to a 300 ft (91.44 m) cataract and pool in the nearby natural amphitheatre. The 11 mile (17.7 km) long Kalalau Trail also traverses through this Valley. Hanakapiai Valley is, no doubt, a day hikers’ delight. Usually, most of the backpackers undertake primitive camping at the Kalalau Beach with overnight stopovers at the famous Hanakapiai Valley. Hikers are required to obtain a day use permit in order to hike the Kalalau Trail beyond the Hanakapiai Valley. As many as 60 permits are issued for each night. At the Hanakapiai Beach, a stream flows down the valley. The 100 ft (30.48 m) high Hanakapiai Falls is the major attraction in the Valley. These spectacular falls cascades down sheer rock back wall of the steep Valley. Besides, there are several stream crossings, waterfalls, and a pool in the Valley.
