Kalalau Lookout

kalaulau lookout

The glorious Kalalau lookout offers breathtaking views of the Kalalau Valley, which is the largest valley on Na Pali. Panoramic views of the Pacific are offered by this stunning Lookout as well as by the Pu'u o Kila Lookout.  The magnificent Kalalau Valley was colonized until 1919. The Kalalau Trail leading to this trail is an 11-mile (18-km) arduous hike down steep sea cliffs to the ocean. This scenic trail is one of the most popular in the world. This point is situated at an elevation of 4000 ft (1200 m) due to which the air here is comparatively much cooler than in the valleys or along the coast.
The most interesting fact about the Kalalau Lookout is that the views from this point change every minute depending on the pervasive clouds. The clouds that come from the inland usually disappear quickly. However, a cloud bank moving in from the ocean tends to last indefinitely. In order to avoid the daily cloudiness, it is highly recommended to arrive early. A major attraction here is the Hawaiian goose, commonly called as the “Nene”. It is often spotted in the parking lots as well as along the roads.  As these birds prefer to walk than fly, they are easily hit by cars and therefore, you should take extra care not to run over them.

In order to reach the Kalalau Lookout, you can take Highway 50 west from Hanapepe toward Waimea and then, turn right on Waimea Canyon Road just past Mile Marker #23. Kalalau Lookout is situated just near the end of the road at Mile Marker #18. Besides offering the best views of the sea cliffs, the Kalalau Valley, and of the ocean, the Kalalau lookout also provides facilities such as restrooms and picnic tables. Great opportunities for photography are also made available here.
