Kilauea Lighthouse

kilauea lighthouse

Kilauea Lighthouse, situated in the northernmost point of the main Hawaiian Islands, was constructed in the year 1913 with an aim to provide a navigational aid for commercial shipping between the Orient and Hawaii. This Lighthouse had the largest lens of those times. However, in the year 1970, this historical landmark was shut down for renovation and was soon replaced by a low-maintenance light beacon. The lighthouse became an integral part of the Coast Guard's Lighthouse Automation and Modernization Program (LAMP) in the year 1974. The Kilauea Lighthouse was finally listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 18, 1979.

The lighthouse is located near the famous Kilauea Point in the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge. A visitor center, located in the vicinity, help the visitors to know more about this place and revel in the past of Kaua’i. This spot attracts thousands of visitors, who come here every year to enjoy the beautiful lush green vegetation in the surrounding area, view the spectacular ocean vistas and the magnificent sweeping cliff, and to bird-watch. The major attractions here are the red-footed boobies, the Laysan albatross, and the great frigate bird. Wingspan of the great frigate bird is about 8 ft (2.4 m).

Another major attraction nearby is the Crater Hill. It is a part of an extinct volcano and offers great hiking opportunities to the visitors. The summit offers breathtaking views of the seabird nests, cliffs, and the North Shore coast. From here, one can also photograph the Moku'ae'ae Islet, situated just offshore from the peninsula. This bird sanctuary is home to the Hawaiian monk seal.
