Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge

native birds

The Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, located in Kilauea, Hawaii, is among the very few refuges in Hawaii that are open to the public. It was transferred from the U. S. Coast Guard and was established at its present location in 1985. This wildlife refuge encompasses over 203 acres (0.822 sq km) of protected land.

A major attraction on the refuge is the Kilauea Lighthouse. This historical lighthouse was constructed in the year 1913 with an aim to provide navigational aid for commercial shipping between the Orient and Hawaii. Kilauea Point, located at the northernmost tip of the Hawaiian Islands, is the most frequently visited spot in the refuge. It offers panoramic views of the magnificent Pacific and great hiking opportunities as well.

This refuge is home to a number of migratory birds like the Pacific golden plover and seabirds such as the Nene and the Laysan Albatross. One can also watch Hawaiian Monk seals, Humpback whales, and spinner dolphins in this area. Volunteers are a vital part of the management of Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge. Daily tours are provided by the volunteers who are readily available to answer any of your questions. Preservation of several native plant species in the refuge is also accomplished with the help of these people.

The Visitor Center houses a small store that is maintained by the Kilauea Point Natural History Association. This store sells t-shirts, books, maps, and other mementos. Besides, the Association also organizes several interpretive programs to encourage environmental education throughout Hawaii.
