Kuhio Highway

hanalei lookout

The Kuhio Highway begins as State Route 56 and heads towards the north out of Lihue. The northbound lanes of the Highway split near mile 5.8 and crosses the Waialua River on both parts of the main two-lane highway bridge. The westbound lane of the Highway near mile 25 narrows to a secondary highway and is designated as State Route 560 in Princeville. This bridge sweeps over the Kalihiwai Stream near mile 25.5. The Kuhio Highway changes route numbers several times in Princeville in order to depict the change of the road from a primary route to a secondary route of lower quality.

The part of the highway ahead of this point was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the year 2004. The mile markers on the Highway follow the usual Hawaiian road sign style. The route numbers are written on white plates below the markers. The "end" signs are quite infrequent in the islands while the "begin" signs are used only on Kauai. The major attraction along the Highway is the Hanalei Valley Lookout, situated at mile 0.1 on the state route 560 portion of the Kuhio Highway, in Princeville. This stunning Lookout provides breathtaking views of the Hanalei River to the South and of the Valley’s inland fields to the south. Panoramic views of the coastal end of the Hanalei Valley are offered by another lookout at mile 0.6 just down the road. The famous Hanalei Bridge takes the Kuhio Highway over the Hanalei River at mile 1.2 of the State Route 560. This bridge was restored in the year 2003.

Another major tourist attraction along this Highway is the beautiful Wai'oli Hui'ia Church located in the Hanalei village. This village is situ at mile 3.0 along route 560. At mile 6.6 of State Route 560, the Highway crosses the Wainiha River on two narrow one-lane bridges. These two wood-decked bridges include the main bridge and a shorter bridge to the east. However, these bridges have very low weight limits. At mile 9.9 of State Route 560 is the famous Waikapala'e Wet Cave. This cave, situated near the west end of the Kuhio Highway, seems to be very impressive. However, swimming in this area is risky. The beautiful Ke`e Beach marks the end of the Highway.
