Kukui Trail is a 2.5 mile (4.0 km) long scenic trail that runs down the west side of the Waimea Canyon. This arduous trail is situated at an elevation of 2240 ft (683 m). It begins along Highway 550, nearly 0.75 miles (1.2 km) beyond the 8-Mile Marker and it ends at the Wiliwili Camp site. Hiking this trail requires a permit and camping for a commercial purpose is not allowed here. The Kauai Recreational Trail Map can be purchased at the Kauai Forestry and Wildlife Office in Lihue for merely $5.00. While hiking the Kukui Trail, bear use any trail that is not delineated by name. Only the marked features are meant for public recreation while the trails that branch off from the public features are included in private property.
The Kukui Trail offers breathtaking views of the Waimea Canyon along its path. These views change every minute owing to the changing light, cloud cover, elevation, and angles. In fact, this trail is the shortest route to the magnificent Canyon. The first part of this exciting trail falls down sharply, cutting through the waterfalls, and switch backing first through the forest, and then along the side of the mountain. At certain places, this trail is just 8 inches (20 cm) wide on slippery dirt and has nothing on one side. On your way down, you will come across a gigantic stretch of slanted red rock, which goes down the mountain. Further down are the thick forests where you can hear a number of wild chickens rustle in the bush. Besides, the Kukui nut trees also grow in abundance in this area. Silk Oak, Lantana, Koa, and Ohia line this part of the trail. The trail in certain parts in this area is covered with twining passionflower vines. The next part of the trail cuts through huge spear-like plants and waist high grasses. Finally, the last part of the trail leads to the cool waters of the magnificent Waimea River.
The stunning scenery along the Kukui trail will certainly leave you spell bound. This scenic trail is full of adventures and offer great opportunities for photography. It also offers breathtaking views of the adjacent valleys and the spectacular Waialea Falls situated to the east-northeast. However, make sure that you drink lots of water and enough rest before you turn around to ascend two miles back to the rim. There are a number of white PVC-pipe mileage markers at 1/4 mile intervals along this trail. A major attraction nearby is the Poipu Beach Park where restrooms and showers are made available. All it takes to reach here is a 45 minutes scenic drive from the trailhead.
