Lihue

lihue

Lihue is the second largest town on Kauai, the northernmost island in the Hawaiian chain. Its name has been derived from the Hawaiian word ‘Līhuʻe’, meaning "cold chill" or “goose flesh”. Formerly known as ‘Ka-laʻ-i-a-mea’, Lihue is the central city of the Island and is situated in the ancient district of Puna.

Lihue is mainly served by the Lihue Airport. Nawiliwili Bay, located in the southeast of the town, is the main seaport for Kauai. Major attractions in the town include the county administration building, Kukui Grove Center, Kauai's largest shopping center and Macy’s, the island's only big department store.  Other stores in the town include Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Costco, and K-Mart. Besides, the town also has a number of car dealerships and restaurants.

The historical landmarks in Lihue include the first Lutheran Church in Hawaii built by the Germans in 1881 and the Kauai Museum. The Museum has several exhibits that reflect the rich history of Kauai. The ancient Wilcox family home in Kilohana, which was owned by George Wilcox, the biggest sugar plantation owner, has now been converted into an elegant restaurant and gift shop. Several crops and livestock are still grown in the plantation surrounding the house.

A narrow gauge tourist railroad with vintage diesel locomotives has been recently installed to provide tours of the plantation. Besides, horse-drawn carriage tours are also offered. Luaus, most of which are offshore excursions, can be booked through NCL America. Lihue is rich in heritage, beauty, and culture and is certainly worth a visit.
