Menehune Fish Pond

menehune fish pond

The Menehune Fish Pond is an ancient Hawaiian Fishpond located near Lihue in East Kauai. It can be viewed from a Viewpoint on the Hulemaiu Road. This magnificent fish pond was built in a moonlit night by the Menehune, the leprechaun-little people. Apparently, the Pond was a necessity for these people as fish was their staple diet. According to many archeologists, the Pond dates back to the pre-Hawaiian times, that is, around 1,000 years ago.

The Menehune Fish Pond faces the Hule'ia Stream. The wall built between the pond and the stream is about 90 feet (27.4 m) long and is certainly an engineering marvel. At present, this Fishpond is privately owned and isn’t used any longer. However, the pond is unique and spectacular and must be visited at least once.

The fishpond can be easily accessed by driving along Highway 50 east towards Puhi and then, turning right on Puhi Road past Mile Marker #2, across the Kauai Community College street. You can view the pond as you turn left on the Hulemaiu road from here.

  • Location: Hulemaiu Road, Lihue, East Kauai
