Secret Beach, popularly known as the Kauapea Beach, is situated at the base of a steep cliff just north of Kilauea. It can be accessed by hiking a zigzag trail that cuts through gullies, trees, and brush. This craggy trail lies at the end of a red dirt road off the Kalihiwai Road. Secret Beach is a magnificent stretch of sand, the beauty of which is enhanced by a gleaming turquoise sea. The famous Kilauea Lighthouse is located to the right of the Secret Beach.
As the water currents at the Beach are strong and unpredictable, swimming or surfing can be risky. Instead, you can just walk along the water and feel the sand between your toes. Excellent snorkeling opportunities are available here. A picnic lunch can be had from Farmer's Market Deli in Kilauea. Also, bring plenty of fresh water along with you.
Walking down the trail takes about 7 minutes while the walk back up takes not more than 10 minutes. However, do not come here after a soaking rain. It is advisable to plan your visit on a clear day if you really want to explore Secret Beach, one of Kauai’s best secrets. Despite the fact that a nudity ban has been enforced by the country authorities, Secret Beach remains to be a premier nude beach in Kauai. This long, yellow sand beach offers breathtaking scenery and is certainly worth a visit during your stay at Hawaii.
