Wailua Falls is a spectacular waterfall located in East Kauai. This magnificent, 80-foot (24-m) tiered waterfall is situated along the Ma’alo Road, very close to the roadside lookout. The falls became popular after it was featured in the opening scene of Fantasy Island, a popular television show.
The most interesting fact about the falls is that it can radically change appearance depending on river’s flow and the rain. The best time to view this magnificent site is early in the morning when the sun shines on the falls. The top of the falls is even with channels cut into rocks by the flowing water.
It is quite adventurous to walk down along a slippery trail to the bottom of the falls and enjoy a dip in the pure, cold mountain water. Only the brave or sure-footed ones should attempt this. However, a fall or a leap from the top of the falls or a hike to the top can be fatal and is strongly discouraged. The beautiful Wailua Falls are easily accessible via Highway 583 and is merely 5 minutes from Lihue.
