Waimea Canyon Lookout is one of the premier attractions in Kauai. This stunning Lookout offers the most spectacular and breathtaking views of the Gorge. In fact, Waimea Canyon is not only the largest canyon in the Pacific but also a remarkable sight to behold. There are a number of lookouts and trails that provide remarkable views of every aspect of this panoramic canyon. The Waimea canyon is nearly 10 miles (16.09 km) long, 1 mile (1.61 km) wide, and over 3,500-feet (1066.8 m) deep. It was carved by floods and rivers that flowed from the summit of Mount Waialeale thousands of years ago. The lines in the canyon walls give a picture of a number of volcanic eruptions and lava flows, which have occurred over the centuries.
The Lookout also offers views of the surrounding Koke'e State Park. This State Park encompasses an area of over 4,345 acres (17.6 sq-km) and has 45 miles (72 km) of trails that cut through the canyon and the Akaka Swamp, situated nearby. The Ranger's Station situated at the Koke'e Museum provides hiking maps of the area. Restrooms are made available only in the main park area and there are no gas stations along the 40-mile (64- km) Waimea Canyon Road. In order to reach the lookout, you should take Highway 50 west from Hanapepe towards Waimea. The Waimea Canyon Road and the Makaha Ridge Road travel to several other scenic lookouts. The Lookout offers great opportunities for photography and the best time to view the magnificent Canyon and the Kalalau Valley is early in the morning. Hale Koa Cabins are also made available on advance reservations.
