Hana Belt Road

Hana Belt Road is also known as Hana Road, Belt Road, or the Hana highway (HI 360). The drive to Hana via the Hana Belt Road is the most renowned scenic drive in Hawaii. The town of Hana is not as adventurous as the road that leads to it is. The Belt Road is cut into panoramic cliffs hung with ginger, giant ferns, bamboo, and pandanus. The road also passes through breathtaking ocean views, magnificent waterfall, a gorgeous rain forest, and a number of idyllic country villages.

Hana Belt Road, designed by the Maui County Engineer’s office in 1920s, is a modern marvel. Amazingly, the road was cut out of the cliff facer by hand with picks! The grading, stonework, and alignment of the road have not been altered since 1926, when they were built.

At many places, the Hana Road widens and narrows from 16-24 ft (4.8-7.3 m) with absolutely no shoulders. It also has a number of hairpin turns. Moreover, mudslides often make the road impassable. Cloudbursts and heavy falls of mango fruits from roadside trees make the road slick and slippery. Owing to these unexpected hazards that the road always offers to unwary visitors and newcomers, Hana Belt Road has a reputation of being “bad”.

One of the major attractions along the road is the Holua stream Bridge. There are over 74 historical landmarks and scenic sites to visit along this road. The narrow two-lane Hana Road crosses nearly 56 one-lane bridges and makes about 617 curves. Despite the fact that the Hana Belt Road is a bit dangerous, the fun, adventure and panoramic views that it offers cannot be ruled out.
