The Hana Cultural Center is the major attraction in Hana, the birthplace of the beautiful Queen Kaahumanu, wife of King Kamehameha I. The Cultural Center features a historic jail, a courthouse, stone lamps, quilts, fish hooks, poi boards, tapa clothe, and much more. The jail in the cultural center was used for over 100 years, from 1871 – 1978. The inmates here were made to scythe the grass and tend the grounds.
The center also houses a magnificent, pre-contact Hawaiian Village reconstruction illustrating housing and garden types of those times. The Center is situated on the Uakea Road, located near the turn-off to the Hana Bay. The Center also runs a gift shop with a unique collection. Admission to the Hana Cultural Center is charged at $2 per adult.
