Kalaupapa National Historic Park is situated on the spectacular Kalaupapa Peninsula, at the base of the 1600-foot (487.6 m) high sea cliffs. Initially, this site was the place where the victims of the Hansen’s disease (leprosy) were kept in complete isolation. This national park is located in north Molokai and encompasses a land area of about 8,725 acres (35.33 sq km) and nearly 2,000 acres (8.1 sq km) of water extending ¼ mile (0.4 km) offshore.
The Kalaupapa National Historic Park was established in the year 1980 in order to preserve the memories of the past and to teach the valuable lesson of fear, ignorance, and humanity, preached by Father Damien. The major attractions in the Park include the settlements of Kalaupapa and Kalawao, the scenic rain forests, a volcanic crater, several lava tubes and caves, and the Molokai Lighthouse.
A small community still inhabits the settlement in the Park. The Kalaupapa Lookout in the Park offers breathtaking views of the peninsula and also provides the necessary educational information about the settlements. The Park also houses an elegant gift shop and a museum.
Admission to the Park is prohibited for children below the age of 16 years. The State Department of Health monitors and controls the public access to the park. Damien Tours and the Molokai Mule Ride are the only two authorized tours that can assist you to visit the Park. Besides, the park can also be accessed by hiking or by air. This historical, scenic, and educational site is certainly worth a visit.
