The Kamehameha V Highway runs along the southern coast of Molokai to a distance of nearly 30 miles (50 km) east of Kaunakakai. It cuts through a number of small coastal villages and offers great scenic tours of the area. The King Kamehameha V Highway has a couple of roads branching off as it crosses from east to west. One branch, officially known as Highway 450, begins at Kaunakakai and ends nearly 27 miles (44 km) east at Hälawa. The other branch, referred to as the Mauna Loa Hwy (460) begins at Kaunakakai and ends 16 miles (26 km) west at the village of Mauna Loa.
There are a number of sites of historic and cultural interest along the highway. The remains of structures throughout the region reflect the traditional Hawaiian and Christian missionary activities in the past. The major tourist attraction along the Highway is the community of Kwela, located to the east of Kaunakakai. This site not only maintains a beach park with picnic facilities but also provides easy access to the Kakahaia National Wildlife Refuge, which is home to a number of endangered species. The community of Ualapue lies further east and has the popular Ualapue Fishpond, which is home to a large population of mullet and milkfish.
If you are planning your next visit to Molokai, it is advisable to reserve a vehicle much in advance. Renting a car will provide freedom and flexibility to see all the major attractions, shopping centers, and restaurants along the highway and in the towns. Driving along the Highway is quite easy. There are green mile posts after every mile to help you navigate around the island. While driving, you will come across a few stop signs and no traffic lights at all. The maximum speed limit on the Highway is merely 45 mph (72 kph).
