Kapuaiwa Coconut Grove

kapuaiwa coconut grove

The Kapuaiwa Coconut Grove is situated on the south shore of Molokai and is merely 1½ miles (2.4 km) west of the city of Kaunakakai. This Grove was planted by King Kamehameha V in the 1860's. It was named after his nickname, Kapuaiwa. The King preferred this site because of the seven magnificent sacred ponds situated here.

Nearly 1,000 soaring, splendid coconut palm trees were planted here to shade the sacred pools of royalty (ali`i). Each of these trees represented a warrior in his powerful army.  However, at present, only a few hundred of these royal palms still stand in this 10-acre (4-ha) area. The Entrance through the Grove is prohibited owing to the real and invariable danger of the falling coconuts.

The nearby Kiowea Beach Park offers breathtaking views of this Grove at sunset. The major attraction is a concrete military bunker that stands at the water edge of the grove. It is a grim and unique reminder of the World War II. The Grove can be reached via Highway 460, and is located on the left across the street from Church Row.
