Kaunakakai is one of the three major cities in Molokai, the fifth largest island in the Hawaiian chain. This city is situated only 8 miles (12.8 km) from the airport off Highway 450 and is merely 3 blocks in size. The major historical landmark in the city is the Molokai Public Library. This library was built in the year 1937.
Kaunakakai, centrally located between east and west coast, is also a primary shopping site in Molokai. Besides, it also has a number of restaurants, grocery stores, shops, and tourist information centers. All these shops and restaurants are located off the main street of Ala Malama. Most of the stores in the town are “mom and pop” establishments. Kaunakakai is a shopper’s paradise but it is advisable to do all the shopping before the dinner hour as most of the shops in the town close early.
Owing to its small size and remote location, there are absolutely no traffic lights in this magnificent city. Moreover, ample parking space is provided in front of the stores. The ferry from Kaunakakai goes to Maui at the Kaunakakai Wharf, situated across the Highway. One can feel the rich culture and a strong community life in this town and therefore, must visit this place during you stay at Molokai.
