Pu`u Kekaa

Pu`u Kekaa is the most prominent landmark in Ka`anapali. Also known as the Black Rock or the ‘rumbling hill’, this black spatter cone dominates the beautiful beach of Ka`anapali. This cinder cone is an imposing promontory that is considered to be a sacred Uhane le`le. It is a common belief that Pu`u Kekaa is the place where the souls of the dead jumped from earth into their spirit land. It is also believed that only a person with immense spiritual strength can enter the ancestral spirit world and return back.
According to a legend, nearly 250 years ago, Maui's King Kahekili demonstrated his valor and dexterity innumerable times by leaping feet first into the ocean in the sport of ‘lele kawa’. A nightly tradition was instituted by the Sheraton Maui Resort in 1963 in order to honor Kahekili and his feats at Black Rock. Everyday, at sunset, a youth lights torches, presents lei offerings, and re-creates the brave king's impressive dive into the sea. It is also believed that Pu`u Kekaa was made by the volcano goddess Pele who made an old lava flow into the sea, thereby, creating a little cove with beaches on either side, which attracted a lot of marine life.
