Pu`u `Ula`ula Summit

Pu`u `Ula`ula Summit is at an elevation of nearly 10,023 feet (3.1 km) and is the highest point on the Maui Island. This summit is located in the Haleakala National Park and can be accessed via Highway 378. There are as many as 1984 eruptive vents to the right of Pu`u `Ula`ula. Most of these vents are black in color with a little golden tint to them. Pu`u Kulua, a black spatter cone built during the pre-historic times, lies to the north-northwest of the Summit. Pu`u `O`o, the most prominent cone on the east rift of Kilauea, is the site of the 1983 eruption.
The summit offers breathtaking views of Maui and the neighboring islands and is the best place to watch the sunrise. The sun rises before 7 am and it is, therefore, advisable to reach the summit much before that if you do not want to miss the spectacular site. Moreover, it is quite chilly at the summit. So, do carry your warm clothes along when you drive to the summit.
A major attraction on the way to the summit is the beautiful, red Pu`u `Ula`ula lava cone, which were created some 8,500 years ago. This spatter cone is named as Pu`u `Ula`ula, meaning red hill, owing to its rusty-red color. The cabin is situated on the west side of Pu`u `Ula`ula spatter cone. Around dusk, you can watch and listen to the hoary bat in this area.
Besides, there is a 4-ft (1.2 m) high monument at the Summit. This monument has a commemorative inscription with arrows pointing out some of the best geographic features. The 1984 Mauna Loa eruption site is situated nearly 2 mi (3.2 km) away, in the direction of Hilo.
