St. Philomena Church

st. philomena church

St. Philomena Church is located in a serene green valley in the Kalaupapa National Historic Preserve in the secluded Kalaupapa.  This church has always been kept apart from the busy modern times. It was built in 1872 by Father Damien (Joseph de Veuster), who held services in the church for 17 years. The Church was fully restored in the year 1989. At present, though the outside of the church retains a traditional appearance, the inside is magnificent with inconspicuous yet elegant décor and tainted glass windows that let in beautiful, colored light beams.

At St. Philomena Church, popularly known as Father Damien's Church, visitors are treated to an oral history of the life of Father Damien. Damien's gravesite is situated adjacent to the church. However, his remains were exhumed and sent to his native town, Belgium, in 1936. You can also avail the video, "Molokai: The Story of Father Damien," from the church to know more about the history of the settlement.
