The Wananalua Congregational Church is located in downtown Hana, a major town in East Maui. This historical church, in its present form, was established in the year 1842. It was constructed by the early missionaries on top of an ancient temple, commonly referred to as a “Heiau”. This Church was built with the main aim to end Paganism and begin Christianity in Hawaii.
In 1838, the Church was first built from volcanic rocks held together with cement of macerated coral stone. The style was similar to that of the churches in New England. The imagery was actually meant to put an end to Hawaiian traditions and beliefs. The interiors of the Wananalua Church are made of the native koa wood. At present, there is a strong inclination to safeguard the Hawaiian Culture. Services in the church are now held both, in English and Hawaiian. The Church can be easily accessed via Highway 31.
