The Bishop Museum, situated in Honolulu, Hawaii, was established by Charles Reed Bishop in 1889. It was founded in honor of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the last descendant of the royal Kamehameha family. This Museum is internationally acclaimed for its research projects, public educational programs, cultural collections, and consulting services. The Bishop Museum mainly aims to serve and represent the interests of the Native Hawaiians and preserve the cultures of the Pacific.
Two major institutions operated by the Museum include the Amy B. H. Greenwell Ethno-botanical Garden and the Hawaii Maritime Center. The former is situated on the island of Hawaii while the latter in the Honolulu Harbor next to the Aloha Tower Marketplace. The Bishop Museum Education programs organized every year attracts over 30,000 students every year. Over 14,000 students take part in the Museum’s science and cultural outreach programs, Holoholo Science and Na Ola Mo `olelo. Besides, many resources are made available to the teacher, parents, and the students. The Bishop Museum Press publishes many scientific papers every year.
At present, the Museum houses an extensive collection of royal family heirlooms of the Princess, Hawaiian artifacts, and millions of photographs and documents of other Pacific island cultures. As many as 2.4 million cultural artifacts displayed in the Museum depict Hawaii, Pacific Island, and the Native Hawaiian immigrant life. In addition, the collection includes over 115,000 historical publications and nearly 1 million historical works of art, photographs, audio recordings, films, and manuscripts.
The Museum also claims to have one of the largest natural history specimen collections in the world. The Natural History collections comprise of more than 22 million specimens of plant and animal life, many of which are endangered or extinct. These plants and animal specimens are mainly from Hawaii, New Guinea, SE Asia, and the Philippines. The Museum is a great learning experience and a “must-see” in Hawaii.
