Hawaii Maritime Center

hawaii maritime center

The Hawaii Maritime Center, situated at Pier 7 of Honolulu Harbor, is a very popular maritime museum in the State of Hawaii. Located just next to Aloha Tower Marketplace, the Maritime Center has been established on what formerly was the privileged boathouse of the renowned King David Kalakaua. The Center features as many as 30 exhibits that give the visitors a unique opportunity to explore and understand Hawaii’s rich maritime past, from the ancient voyage of Polynesian explorers and the wistful days of the Lurline that brought tourists from San Francisco to Waikiki on 4-day cruises. The major attraction at the Maritime Center is the Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum.

The Maritime Center is home to the world’s only full-rigged, four-masted ship, the Falls of Clyde. This schooner once ran tea from China to the West Coast. It was made for the whaling industry in 1878 and has now been designated a National Historic Landmark. Another major attraction at the Hawaii Maritime Center is Hokule`a, a voyaging canoe that served as a scientific research vessel for the Native Hawaiians for a number of years. Some of the other impressive exhibits at the museum include a 1,805 pound pacific Blue Marlin that was caught off the coast of Makaha; a replica of a Polynesian sailing canoe used by the first Hawaiians; the flying boats that conveyed the mail; and the skeletal remains of a Pacific humpback whale that was found in a cove on Kahoolawe, off of Hawaii.

At the Surf’s-Up exhibit, visitors are invited to view certain impressive displays and videos on today’s hottest windsurfers as well as the old-time surfing greats, such as Duke Kahanamoku. Besides, the museum also offers several laser disc videos, a stereo Walkman audio tour, and audio exhibits. Pier 7 Gifts offers a number of nautical souvenirs and handmade treasures, ranging from jewelry, books, and t-shirts to scrimshaw and brass.

The museum and its various exhibits commemorate the whaling era, today’s ocean sports, the ocean linear golden age, and the ancient Hawaiians who navigated the Pacific nearly 1500 years ago. In other words, the Hawaii Maritime Center is dedicated to the ocean legacy of Hawaii. This Maritime Center is situated just off the Nimitz Highway and is easily accessible to the public. It is the best way to relive the Hawaiian history and is a ‘must-see’ for all those who visit Hawaii.
