Hawaii Theatre

hawaii theatre

Hawaii Theater was constructed in 1922. Constructed as a vaudeville house, it was made perfect with dressing rooms orchestra pit. Afterwards, this structure turned to a movie theater. Soon after it turned to a theater, it remained closed for many years, and then the theater was reopened after a slight renovation in May, 1996.

The new structure came up with a 1,400-seat multipurpose presentation facility. It is intended to have room for musical theater and concerts as well as the respected Hawaii International Film Festival.

It is famous as the "Pride of the Pacific". This beautiful theatre, constructed by the Consolidated Amusement Company, was inaugurated on September 6, 1922 in Honolulu. The Hawaii Theatre, initially, was operated as a place for plays, vaudeville, silent films and musicals. But after some time, the land lease was discarded in 1984.  After all this happened, The Hawaii Theatre Center, which is a nonprofit corporation was formed in order to save the Hawaii Theatre. After consistent efforts, The Hawaii Theatre was reopened as a multi-purpose, state-of-the art performance center.

The Hawaii Theatre has been honored as the 'Outstanding Historic Theatre in America' by the League of Historic American Theatres in 2005 and, again in 2006, it honored by “the National Trust for Historic Preservation.” This historic theater is listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places; the Hawaii Theatre is available for all of Hawaii to enjoy. A $2 fee is applicable for entry in the theater.
