The Mission Houses Museum, situated in Honolulu, Hawaii, was established by the Hawaiian Mission Children’s Society in the year 1920. This Museum aims at collecting, preserving, interpreting, and exhibiting artifacts, records, and documents of the “missionary” period of Hawaii from 1820 to 1863 and beyond. The collection that the Museum holds is made available not only for enjoyment but also for research and educational purposes. This entire collection comprises of nearly 12,000 books, diaries, illustrations, manuscripts, original letters, journals, and Hawaiian church records. Besides, the Museum also holds more than 3,000 Western, Hawaiian, and Pacific artifacts.
The Mission Houses Museum has three restored houses and a research library that gives the visitors an opportunity to understand and explore the 19th century Hawaii. A temporary exhibition has also been implemented in the First Floor Gallery of the newly renovated Chamberlain House. This Gallery, with its exhibitions such as “The Marquesas: Two Centuries of Cultural Traditions and Lasting Impressions: Printing & Engraving in Hawaii”, expands the relevance and the positive impact of the Museum. Also, the Museum houses an Orientation Center, the Winterbourne Tea Room, and a Museum Shop. The various impressive exhibitions at the Museum are complemented by many public programming events, activities, scholarly lectures, workshops, gallery talks, and demonstrations. Other programs organized by the Museum include the traditional programs like lauhala weaving, the quilting classes, the annual holiday craft fair, historic house tours, and letterpress printing demonstrations.
At present, over 15,000 people visit the Museum annually. The Museum, thus, makes every effort to encourage cross-cultural understanding of Hawaii’s history and incorporate modern elements into all its exhibitions, workshops, adult and school programs, and special events. It compares cultural traditions, examines cultural change through foreign contacts, and thus, serves as an advocate for critical thinking about colonialism, history, cross-cultural contact, and transformation. It is dedicated to lay special emphasis on the native Hawaiian and Pacific Islands communities and include their voices in interpreting the complex and rich history of Hawaii.
