The National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific is considered to be among the most outstanding national cemeteries in US. The National Cemetery occupies a greater portion of Punchbowl Crater. This memorial consists of a small chapel and tribute to many battles fought in the Pacific. The walls of this national memorial are engraved with names of those who could never be recovered from combats.
This historical memorial cemetery, famous as Punchbowl National Cemetery as well, is situated in Honolulu, Hawaii and serves a memorial to all those people who served in the United States Armed Forces. Its administration is taken care by the ‘National Cemetery Administration of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs’ It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. As thousand of visitors come here to see this national memorial, this has become a key attraction in Hawaii.
In the year 1948, with the financial support of Congress, construction started on the national cemetery. The cemetery was mainly dedicated to September 2, 1949 event however, it is full now and a new veterans cemetery has been built. Before the inauguration of this cemetery, the remains of military from places around the Pacific Theater, including Japanese POW camps, Guam and Wake Island were sent to Hawaii for interment. The very first burial was done on January 4, 1949. The cemetery was finally open to the public on July 19, 1949. Primarily, the graves at this cemetery were marked with white colored wooden crosses.
