North Shore

The North Shore is the north-facing coastal area of Oahu, between the Kahuku Point and the Ka`ena Point. It is the largest settlement in Haleiwa and is well known for its massive waves, attracting surfers from all over the world, especially during the winter months. The swells originating in the stormy North Pacific make North Shore the best surfing destination in the world. The well-frequented surfing spots on the North Shore include the Sunset Beach and the Banzai Pipeline. The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing is held at several beaches along the North Shore, every year in November and December. A major attraction along the Shore is the ‘Turtle Bay’, which has also been featured in the film, Lost. This area is mainly known for its rock formations and constant rolling surf.

Breathtaking views of the Oahu natural beauty and the Pacific Ocean are offered by the beaches and the nature parks that line the North Shore. Pu`u O Mahuka Heiau and Ka`ena Point to the west are two such places. The former is situated above Waimea and is the largest and oldest ancient Hawaiian religious site in Oahu. Some of the major tourist activities along the North Shore include picnicking, whale watching, skydiving and glider rides at the Dillingham Airfield, golfing at Turtle Bay Resort’s championship golf course, and horseback riding. The Dillingham Airfield is also known for hang gliding, parachuting, and recreational small aircraft. A world class botanical garden is maintained at the Waimea Falls by the Waimea Valley Audubon Center. One can see several ancient Hawaiian cultural sites in this garden.

The North Shore also offers many cultural events throughout the year. These include cultural festivals, fireworks, farmer’s markets, Haleiwa Arts Festival, surfing competitions, fishing tournaments, polo, swim series, and triathlons. The other major North Shore attractions include the Polynesian Cultural Center, the Dole Plantation, the Laie Hawaii Mormon Temple, the Kunaniloko Birthstones State Monument, the Turtle Bay Golf Resort & Spa, North Shore Surf and Cultural Museum, North Shore Country Market, the Pupukea Marine Life Conservation District, and the Waialua Sugar Mill. The James Campbell National Wildlife Refuge along the North Shore also attracts thousands of visitors every year. At present, the unique charm of the North Shore offers visitors and residents with an opportunity to appreciate the past while enjoying the present to the fullest.
