The Waimea Valley Audubon Center, situated in Haleiwa, Hawaii, is a famous botanical garden on the north shore of Oahu. It is also popularly known as the Waimea Arboretum and Botanical Garden. It features stone terraces and walls of historic interest and is a vital center of Hawaiian religion. Located in the Waimea Valley, this Center is managed and monitored by the National Audubon Society.
Initially, a significant portion of the garden floor was cultivated for sweet potato, taro, and banana, with orchards and new crops introduced by the Europeans. At present, this botanical garden is home to 35 different collections, representing a total of 5,000 taxa from around the globe. It also claims to have the finest collection of Polynesian plants in existence. Besides, there are impressive collections of extremely rare Hawaiian plants and of the endangered species native to Lord Howe Island.
The Audubon Center also has individual gardens dedicated to plants from the Seychelles, Madagascar, the Ogasawara Islands, the Mascarene Islands, and Guam. Other main collections include the bauhinia, heliconia, bamboo, begonia, ferns, araceae, bromeliaceae, liliaceae, tropical fruit, and the hibiscus evolutionary garden. The Garden valley is nearly 0.75 miles (1.2 km) long and it has a small waterfall and a swimming hole at its high end.
