History of Hawaii

  empire state building

The State of Hawaii, situated in the central Pacific Ocean, south of Alaska, is an archipelagic state of the United States. This state is popularly known as the “Big Isle” owing to its huge size. The area was inhabited by the Polynesian settlers in the 11th century. These settlers were mainly from the Marquesas, Bora Bora, and Raiatea. British explorer James Cook was the first European to explore the area, in 1778. Cook named this area the “Sandwich Islands” in honor of his sponsor, John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich.

The monarchy in existed in the Kingdom of Hawaii from 1810 until 1893. Following a series of battles, which ended in 1795, all of the inhabited islands were vanquished under a single ruler, King Kamehameha-the Great. His dynasty ruled over the Kingdom until 1872. After the death of King Kamehameha V, King Lunalilo was elected as the monarch. After his death, the governance was finally handed over to the House of Kalakaua, which reigned until Queen Liliuokalani, sister of King Kalakaua, was overthrown in 1893. However, a joint Apology Resolution regarding this overthrow, signed by President Clinton, was passed by the Congress in 1993.

After the monarchy was overthrown, Hawaii was made an independent republic in 1894. This was followed by the adoption of the Newlands Resolution in Congress, after which the Republic of Hawaii was handed over to the United States. The region became the Territory of Hawaii on July 7, 1898. Hawaii was granted self-governance in 1900. Hawaii was finally admitted to the Union as a State in 1959. Hawaii was the only state in the nation to have a formal international diplomatic recognition. There was a rapid growth in the economy of the state after receiving statehood. The Hawaii Republican Party was also replaced by the Democratic Party of Hawaii, which dominated state politics for nearly 40 years.
