Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL)

control room at INEEL

The Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL), situated in the Idaho desert between the towns of Idaho Falls and Arco, is a science-based, applied engineering national laboratory committed to supporting the U.S. Department of Energy's missions in nuclear and energy research, national defense, and science. It encompasses an area of nearly 890 square-miles (). The Laboratory was first set up in 1949 as the National Reactor Testing Station (NRTS). This site was renamed as the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) in 1975 and then as Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL) in 1977. It was in 1997 that the site was finally named as the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL). However, after operation of this lab was taken over by Battelle Energy Alliance in 2005, many research activities were consolidated, and at present, the Lab is popularly known as the Idaho National Laboratory (INL).

The INL aims at developing and demonstrating national security technologies, providing international nuclear leadership for the 21st Century, and offering excellence in science and technology as one of the Department of Energy's multi-program national laboratories. Today, as many as 8,000 people are employed by the INL. More than 3,500 scientists, support staff, and researchers in the Laboratory work with universities, national and international governments, and industry partners in order to invent new technologies that underpin environmental missions, national security, and the nuclear and renewable energy of the nation.

The main work at INL include testing experimental reactor designs, developing technologies to manage nuclear waste, and developing prototype reactors for ships in the US navy. Besides, the Lab also operates the Advanced Test Reactor, which is used to test new components and fuels or to radiate materials. Also, the HTRE test facilities can be seen in the foreground. It is almost certain that INL will be the pre-eminent nuclear energy laboratory with synergistic, world-class, multi-program capabilities and partnerships within 10 years.
