Located in the picturesque Sawtooth National Recreation Area, the Redfish Lake gets its name from the Sockeye Salmon that boasts of an electrifying red color. Such high was the population of this variety of Salmon fish in the past that during the spawning season the lake almost turned red from the borrowed hues. Sadly, today the species is on the decline and a drive is on to enhance their numbers.

Summers are filled with tourists eager to bask in the beauty of the mountains alongside the pristine waters of the Redfish Lake. Recreational options are aplenty as the waterfront combined with the hilly terrain offers scope to participate and enjoy boat rides, boat launching ramps, rafting, water skiing, swimming, scuba diving, hiking and horseback rides. Everyone will find a wonderful leisure activity to participate. The quiet picnic area is a relaxing spot and the abundant wildlife adds to the excitement as the bald eagles, wolverine, lynx, chipmunk and the endangered grey wolf can all be spotted in the region.
Redfish Lake has a visitor center which offers a wide range of interpretive activities along with exhibits all providing useful information about the history, wildlife, recreational opportunities and geology of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. Pictures and Audio and Visual CD’s capturing the gorgeous surroundings are available. Redfish Lake destination also has a general store merchandising apparels, souvenirs and groceries.
