A city with abundant natural resources and a deep rooted history, Salmon is located in Idaho within Lemhi County.
Salmon city is ideally located offering easy access to a number of mountains, streams, lakes, rivers and forests. With the brimming Salmon River passing right through the heart of the city, it facilitates recreational activities, most popularly fishing. Lewis and Clark had nicknamed the Salmon River as the "River of No Return", and till date it is one of the few un-dammed rivers in Northern America.
Boating, tubing, rafting, swimming, hunting, trekking, horse-packing, forest trails, skiing are favorites with residents and tourists alike. Within the city are several man-made amenities for leisure, amusement and education, including four well maintained parks, a public swimming pool and an ice rink, a municipal golf course, numerous athletic fields for other sports, Lost Trail powder mountain ski resort and the Sacagawea Interpretive Center.
Salmon has a crucial place in the annals of history, on account of the Lewis and Clark expedition that crossed this city, refilling their supplies and also gathering useful information for their trail ahead. A Shoshone woman named Sacagawea, who is popular historical figure today is said to have accompanied Lewis and Clark in their journey and had provided great assistance in their endeavor. Married to a French trader and pregnant with their first child during the expedition, Sacagawea spoke the Shoshone language and assisted the team in translating the information they received from Shoshone tribes. With her birth place being traced to the present Salmon city, the Sacagawea Interpretive Center was established to educate public about the legend of Sacagawea and offer as authentic information as possible about her life and times.
