Shoshone Falls

shoshone falls

Shoshone Falls, popularly known as the "Niagara of the West," is situated nearly 5 miles (8.02 km) east of Twin Falls, Idaho. This spectacular waterfall on the Snake River flows over a rim 900 feet (274 meters) wide and is 212 feet (65 meters) high. The best time to view the Shoshone Falls is during the spring as the water level in the Snake River is greatly diminished in summer and autumn. These Falls originate from the Absaroka Mountains. The beautiful park overlooking the waterfall is operated and owned by the City of Twin Falls. One can also view the Bridal Veil Falls to the right on entering the Park.

Shoshone Falls are the most popular falls in Idaho, and also the most powerful ones in the Northwest. They are also famous as the site of Evil Knivel's ill-fated attempt to jump the river on a rocket bike. The falls are turned off during the peak agricultural season by the Miner Dam and the small dam immediately above the falls. In the lower water levels, the Shoshone Falls become segmented. These spectacular falls can be accessed by driving along US 97 into the City of Twin Falls, crossing the dangerous Snake River, and then continuing nearly 1.8 miles (2.9 km) to Falls Avenue. The signed Park entrance is just 3 miles (5 km) from the Falls Avenue. The Viewpoint is 50 ft (15 m) away from the parking lot.
