Stanley

fishing in stanley lake

A wintry city located to the north of Boise within the Sawtooth Recreational area, Stanley is sparsely populated and has an area of about 395 acres. Surrounded by three national forests, Boise, Challis and Sawtooth, there are ample recreational opportunities especially for camping and hiking. Moreover being within the vicinity of Sawtooth National Recreation Area, Stanley is increasingly attracting more and more tourists. Geographically it is part of a valley named as the Stanley Basin after Captain John Stanley, a Civil War survivor and prospector who set foot on this land on the look out for gold fields.

The major attractions in this serene city are Land of the Yankee Fork, a state park of recent origin with camping and fishing facilities and the Yankee Fork Gold Dredge representing the gold rush of 1870’s, also home to Custer and Bonanza, two gold camps established during the same time.  Tourists also enjoy tours of the Stanley Museum which depicts the early days of the town and also initial inhabitation in and around the Stanley Basin.

Surrounded by several beautiful lakes, Stanley is also the closet to the famous Redfish and Little Redfish Lakes situated in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. A popular road that passes through some of the most enchanting meadows and forests in the Stanley Basin is called the Nip and Tuck Road. Presenting a clear view of the massive Sawtooth mountain range, the scenery flaunted here is truly amazing and is often captured by photographers.
