History of Idaho

  empire state building

The State of Idaho, situated in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States of America, was admitted to the Union as the 43rd State on July 3, 1890. The Idaho area was first settled nearly 14, 500 years ago. The major Native American tribes in the region included the Northern and Western Shoshone in the south and the Nez Perce in the north. Idaho, formerly a part of the Oregon Country, was claimed by both United Kingdom and the United States until the latter gained undisputed jurisdiction in 1846. Many parts of the present-day Idaho were included in the Washington, Dakota, and Oregon territories and finally, the Idaho Territory was created in 1863.

The new territory included Montana, Wyoming, and most of the present-day state of Idaho. It was in 1860 that the first organized communities were established within the present state borders. The name of the territory was suggested by George M. Willing. Some of the major historical events that took place before Idaho achieved statehood in 1890 included the chaotic transfer of the territorial capital from Lewiston to Boise, a federal attempt to split the territory between Nevada and the Washington territory, and the disenfranchisement of the large Mormon minority. After Idaho was admitted to the Union, its economy shifted towards tourism and agriculture and later to science and technology industries.
